This is the only item from our Mr. Maybe, we'll have to wait and see. There was a time when they said 35mm cameras would kill photography.

Then the same thing happened with Polaroid. And again when digital photography was introduced. The nature of things changes with time. In a few years time almost everyone will be shooting on pocketable devices of one kind or another, and will look back on our "real" cameras and wonder how we ever managed.

I won't I used film SLRs for donkey's years and swore I'd never turn to digital. Among my circle of photographer friends, I was the last to make the switch. I'll be the same with DSLRs - I love using my Canons and although I've tried several mirrorless cameras, and they give excellent images, they just don't provide the same pleasure in use. I'd be exactly the same with phone-cameras. But a lot of people, especially the smartphone generation and beyond will not want to use "real" cameras. But some transcend that level, and are true artists in exactly the same sense as Van Gogh, Picasso etc.

For me, photography is not just a kind of art, to hang framed "artsy" Pictures on my walls, it's more a tool to capture moments in my life. And These moments don't always have to be captured in the best possible way technically. Lots of the Images in our Photobooks are taken with the phone, because they where there in the certain moment, and are are great memory for us. I really don't care that the Images could be somehow better with a better camera, because I know that I probably would have never taken these Images with my Fuji, just because I don't have it with me all the time.

The phone is available almost all the day, the camera app starts up almost instantly, and the moment is saved.

Yarrow is great, no doubt. Maybe they are "Art", not sure. Ansel Adams was a superb craftsman and technician. I would not consider his photos "Art". Not everything a great shooter touches is high art, but where a keen mind is at work we can see purpose and connection with the goals of art being searched out,and sometimes realized. The medium is irrelevant, it is the vision of the artist, and the interpretation and appreciation of that vision by the viewer, that defines art. The guy who points and shoots without vision or thought is not an artist, anymore than the child using crayons for the first time.

  • Most artists probably have an inherent natural power of visualisation, but art is something that is generally developed over a period of time. Same with landscapes. If you see a great landscape and take a photo of it, no matter how beautiful: the true artist is "Nature" or "God" or whatever - but not the photographer. Now compare this to true artist landscape paintings by Monet or Van Gough for example. For large part I see photographers as "craftsman", not as "artists". There are exceptions of course. I guess what it boils down too is how much is the input of the photographer.

You come across a beautiful sunset, you frame it nicely, apply your knowledge of aperture and shutter speeds and do some post processing pulling a few sliders in LR perhaps. BBQue - "You come across a beautiful sunset, you frame it nicely, apply your knowledge of aperture and shutter speeds and do some post processing.. However, a "photographic artist" DOES follow the same process as the painter - he doesn't "come across" a scene.

He has a very clear visualisation of what he wants on his "canvas" before he begins the photographic process. He will spend hours exploring and looking for the perfect composition from a million possibilities. He will explore different lighting effects and how they interact with the subject matter. There is a great deal more creativity involved than you give credit. Fair point entoman - yet, the landscape photographer is very contsrained by what he finds as opposed to what he creates. That's why so many landscape photos look interchangeable. Hard to find a specific "style".

But to be honest, only a few of us are photographic artist in this kind of way. Most of us, professional photographers and hobbyists see a scene, and try to capture it in the best possible way.

And to add some more relativization: Out of all people who use digital cameras, even the pros and hobbyists are only a small part. Most people are "point and shooters". To come back to Apples implementation of reality in its camera: For most people this is exactly what they want.

The headline is very misleading. Actually nothing has changed as far as I know. They are better isolated.
